Karate - The Basics

 

 

Body Weapons

 

Fist – To correctly form the fist firstly open your hand, clench four fingers tightly into the palm, press your thumb down against your index and third fingers to complete the proper fist.

It is important that the wrist is level, to correctly align the bones for maximum impact.

 

 

Back Fist – formed as above, using the back of the fist for striking.

 

 

 

 

Uses – striking the temple, chin, jaw, neck, back of head

 

Bottom Fist – formed as the fist, using the bottom of the hand for striking

 

 

Uses – striking the head, arms, chest, thighs, ribs, solar plexus, back and shoulders.

 

Open knuckle fist – Bend your fingers tightly against the inside of your fist knuckle, bend and press your thumb tightly against the side of the hand.

 

 

 

Uses – striking the temple, between the ribs, throat, under the nose, biceps, triceps, thigh, side of knee, kidney

 

Dragon Punch – form the hand the same as the fist, extend the second finger knuckle forward, compress other fingers in to palm.

 

  

 

Uses – striking the temple, behind the ear, between the ribs, throat, under the nose, biceps, triceps, thigh, side of knee, kidney.

 

Index finger punch – form the hand the same as the fist, extend the second knuckle of the index finger, grip thumb onto tip of index finger.

 

 

Uses – striking the temple, behind the ear, between the ribs, throat, under the nose, biceps, triceps, thigh, side of knee, kidney.

 

Spear hand - extend your fingers, keeping them closed tightly, bend thumb in against side of hand.

 

Uses – striking ribs, under the ribs, throat, neck inside groin, solar plexus

 

Ridge hand – follow the instructions for spear hand

 

Uses – striking the temple, behind the ear, between the ribs, throat, under the nose, triceps, thigh and kidney.

 

Knife Hand – extend your fingers, slightly bent at second knuckles until your hand is tight

.

 

Uses – striking and blocking, between the ribs, throat, under the nose, biceps, triceps, thigh and kidney.

 

Elbow – To form the elbow bend inward at the joint – can be used horizontally and vertical

 

 

          

 

Uses – striking the temple, behind the ear, between the ribs, throat, under the nose, biceps, triceps, thigh, shoulder, back, neck, chest, and kidney.

 

Palm Heel – lift your hand back against the wrist, slightly bending your fingers.

 

Uses – blocking and striking the face, jaw chin, nose, ribs and solar plexus

 

Heel of wrist – bend your wrist sharply inwards, gripping your finger tips.

Uses – striking the temple, behind the ear, jaw, chin, groin – blocking to wrist, inside of knee.

 

Tiger Mouth Hand – separate your thumb from the extended fingers.

Uses – striking the throat and across knee and arm joints.

 

Ball of foot – point your toes, stretch your instep, and then pull your toes upwards keeping the rest of the foot pointing away, leaving the ball of the foot for striking.

 

 

 

Instep – point toes as far away as possible, making your foot fully extended.

 

  

 

Side of foot – twist from the ankle, extend the edge of the foot, pull your toes upwards.

 

   

 

Heel – extend the leg pulling your instep up towards the shin

Knee – bend leg pointing toes to floor
